Castillo de San Marcos
bastioned coastal fort · Tier A · verified
Built by Spain at St. Augustine from 1672 to 1695, the Castillo is a four-bastion coquina fort on Matanzas Bay. Its shellstone masonry, dry moat and layered outer works record changing plans and repairs across several centuries; the 1677 construction plan and modern aerial view show different moments in that history.
